Tiny Tech Orchestra
Coding e Fabbricazione Digitale per trasformare l’immaginazione dei bambini in robot musicali
2024 - 2025
Education and Civic engagement
In October 2024, OpenDot launched a training program with the Istituto Comprensivo Arcadia—combining creativity, electronics, and education—within the framework of the PNRR 65 STEM activities (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
The initiative, aimed at stimulating children's imagination and promoting hands-on learning, involves 7 fourth-grade classes and 7 third-grade classes, teaching them the basics of circuitry and design. Each class is building musical robots.
Through practical exercises, the children learn to explore the world with fresh eyes, developing critical and creative skills.
Music is the centerpiece of the project, not just understood as sounds, rhythm, and melody, but as a universal language capable of uniting, including, and highlighting the uniqueness of each child, fostering a collective and collaborative experience.
The Tiny Tech Orchestra program included 4 sessions for each class. During these meetings, the children worked in groups to design, program, and create a small musician— a technological prototype resulting from the skills they acquired.
- Designing the Musician
Each group designed their own musician, inspired by the characteristics of an animal chosen by each member. - 3D Modeling and Digital Fabrication
The children learned the basics of 3D modeling on Tinkercad to create the parts of their musician, which were then made using a 3D printer. - Electronics and Coding
After learning the basic concepts of electronics and building their first circuits, the participants programmed the movements and sounds of their small musicians using the Micro:bit board. - Creation and Presentation
The children assembled their prototypes, and each group presented their work to classmates and parents, sharing the story and functionality of their creation.
The Tiny Tech Orchestra course is based on the learning-by-doing method, which engages intellectual, manual, and creative skills, stimulating discussion, critical thinking, and teamwork.
The final phase of the project involves creating small orchestras made up of sound and mechanical instruments. Inspired by their favorite animals, children transform simple ideas into unique and lively instruments: a mix of creatures comes to life through sounds and movements. Each mini-orchestra tells an original story, the result of the creativity and collaboration of the young participants.
